Rockwheeling in Townsville

As part of the national advocacy tour, IMBA Australia visited the Rockwheelers MTB Club in Townsville to check out their latest trails. Our rationale was to build the case that there are working trails in the land down under that provide perfect examples of the IMBA model in operation in our soils and our climate. On top of that, Joey was keen to see how these guys were going after his visit in 2002.

We can safely say that these folks have the sustainable trail design and construction process dialled, and now that they are using machines to build there is no stopping them. These guys demonstrate innovation in many areas; for example they take the profits from their events to pay for trail development. So when it comes to high quality trails in Far North Queensland these guys are setting a bench mark for some very cool XC trails. These guys rock and they sure know how to keep the flow.

On Saturday we had the chance to get out on Hayden’s very nice boat and we took a trip to the Great Barrier Reef. Fishing, snorkelling and chilling out were much deserved and much needed. The coolest place to be was in the water. We saw dolphins, reef sharks, star fish, squid and a whole host of marine life.

Thanks to Peter Mclean, Hayden Tilley and the Club for looking after us so well; as well as the trails, I will remember that day on the reef for the rest of my days.

Rock on!
